Peuchen, Major Arthur Godfrey - an officer in the Canadian armed forces, and a Toronto based amateur yachtsman who volunteered to crew a lifeboat when it was discovered that there were not enough crew on board. He climbed down the falls to the lifeboat on the water. He left behind securities valued at $300,000 on the table in his cabin. At the American inquiry he related how one of the Officers had tried to recall some of the lifeboats with a whistle when it became evident that those on board would perish unless they could get into a lifeboat.
