Five years previously he was told by a soothsayer that he would lose his life in a marine disaster when he visited a gypsy camp to have his fortune told. He was told that he would die on his second trip abroad. He went to Europe shortly afterwards. Several months previous to the Titanic disaster, he went to Europe again taking his wife and daughter. His friends joked about the prediction, but he ridiculed the idea. However, he did arrange all his affairs before he left. He carried life insurance to the value of $100,000 and $60,000 accident insurance.
